They say the best camera is the one you have with you.

Smartphone cameras have come a long way in the last decade, or even the last 5 years. You have a device that can capture 960 FPS, HDR video, and 4K resolution that you can carry around in your pocket.

Pretty much. That being said, even with all the clever processing tricks and improved lens, they are still no match for a proper camera with good glass, large sensor, etc... even today, I still look at my iPhone XS Max vs my amateur DSLR (Canon EOS 200D aka Rebel SL2 in the US) and the DSLR smashes it everytime. Little things like the speed at which it can focus/take photos and take burst photos make a huge difference even in point and shoot mode, before you start to consider playing with the aperture and shutter speeds, etc... and of course, different lenses for different purposes. The downside to all that is just the size and hassle of it all which for candid photography, isn't great, but if you can plan ahead a little and set it up beforehand, you will get amazing shots.

I vacationed in Italy a few months back and I used my phone's full bag of camera tricks (wide angle, telephoto, night mode, super slo motion, super steady mode, etc).

I could get the shot and video I wanted in about 90% of use cases. They sure came in handy, let me tell you.

Yep, travelling abroad and trying to get around, you don't want to carry much more than this and cameraphone photos are more than decent enough to preserve the memories. I love my DSLR and lens, but realistically it's a hassle to bring when you're touristing around town and walking everywhere.

Dont disagree. But in this day and age where you can google and find out what most peoples salary (range) is based on job title and company, its not too hard for those who at least know your name to work things out.

I think it's hard to say what is or isn't a "bad" customer vs one who just takes everything very literally even if the result is immaterial/inconsequential.

I worked in a consulting firm where we bill based on agreed rates, and expenses as incurred. One expense is printing where we have a rate per page printed (it's not marked up, it's a sensible price like 20 cents or something per page IIRC).

I once had someone call me up and challenge us on our printing charges because they noted some of the pages in their document were blank and on the back of another page, hence in double sided printing, it shouldn't have cost them anything and they wanted a refund.

They also challenged me on international call charges (yes back when international calls weren't free/unlimited) when they said we could've used Skype or something, and the effort it would take to go to our IT team, to work out who was called exactly and when, and from whose phone, etc... it just wasn't worth the hassle.

The cost of my time to figure it out and then debate with them over this wasn't worth my hassle so I just gave them an arbitrary credit note of $500 (this was on a $900k invoice).

But I guess I'm pretty good at spotting bad sellers. Most of the obvious bad ones don't have self-taken pictures of the device they are selling from multiple angles, screen off and on. And they aren't above 95% positive reviews. They often have really poorly written English as well.

I assume being conservative in the listing helps reduce returns.

they will just have to adapt to a world without china. until china is ready to pull its head out of its ass they dont deserve trading rights with the rest of the world. unfortunately they wont actually be revoked but it should happen

Whilst I dont agree with all of the ways that they do things (and I use that term to generalise about both private and public sectors), theyve done well to establish themselves as a key market for everyone else. In other words I dont think anyone is going to race to be the first to pull out entirely in 2019 as itll be both economic and political suicide in many cases even if individuals dont agree with some of the practices. Heck everyone is against sweat shops yet the majority are still wearing clothes which likely originated there or at least were made from materials produced under less than desirable conditions.

LightHawKnight posted...
If they steal from every other foreign country, cant they all band together to fuck up China?

i dont think you quite understand the broader issue here- the companies can steal IP because there is weak enforcement of weak IP rules to begin with, the courts are perceived to have a bias to the home team and even within the manufacturing sector, companies and individuals dont value the intellectual property and instead compete on efficiency and execution.

That last point is a fundamentally different mindset to many of us in the West where we usually value and recognise the creativity or ideas person who came up with the idea over the person who actually executed on it.

Like they're seriously trying to do this during a global environment crisis and are just going to fuck over the world harder by replacing all non-chinese electronics. They should literally fuck off to a different planet and stop ruining this one. They don't even give their citizens basic human rights.

Everyone is happy to jump on board this train until they realise the cost of so many things in their life will go up (or become unavailable), and there is real potential for unemployment to rise in the short term too.

I honestly don't and judging by some responses wouldn't like to.
I think it's absolutely insane someone could get fired over a bad word that wasn't directed at anyone nor were there any (potential) clients in the vicinity. Yes, people should be able to carry themselves in a professional manner and TC screwed up. But I'd consider not going "b-b-but they used a no-no" to a superior to be carrying yourself in a professional manner as well.
I mostly work with "manly" men who think calling each other gay is hilarious and it got annoying fast. Seems like this is just the other extreme to that.

Fair enough. My best friend recently joined my company and used the G word... and was shocked when I let him know that whilst socially I'm fine with it, given the prominence of our company in LGBT communities it would be unwise to use such language around the office loosely.

I think I'm just used to being careful with words and behaviours nowadays but being PC all the time isn't natural and definitely isn't for everyone.

I personally think it's flawed that they're trying to catch people who would otherwise aspire to buy a base model Lexus or 3 series. Those guys want the badge and the luxury. Honda is neither in this segment. Note we don't have Acura here either. Alternatively it might catch people who look for the traditionally upmarket models like the Subaru liberty (legacy) or a high spec Mazda 6 but honestly I don't know if I would take a chance on Honda at the moment since they aren't leaders in the field with their current tech (also note we get our Honda's from Thailand which may miss out on some stuff you guys get in the US).

My current car has a touch screen interface and its not comfortable to use when driving since you need to look, lean forward, press, make sure it registered, etc. It has a track pad which is mildly better with its attempt at haptic feedback but I prefer something more straightforward.

We don't get subsidies on EVs, and the charging infrastructure is presumably a lot less developed than the US. For many people, EVs still don't make a whole lot of sense.

For my most recent car purchase a few months ago I would've loved to get a Tesla but it just wasn't practical. Nowhere to charge since I live in a strata building (i.e. you'd need to submit alot of paper work and spend $10k+ to get the charger installed in your parking spot) and the places where I go, don't have EV charging. I also wouldn't be keen to have to stop/park/charge for 40mins in random locations.
